Using Google Trends to determine interest in glucose-lowering drugs in healtcare

Abstract

Анотація. Актуальність проблеми та мета. Препарати групи інгібіторів натрій-залежного котранспортера глюкози (зокрема емпагліфлозин, дапагліфлозин, канагліфлозин тощо) вже продемонстрували свою безпечність. Метою роботи є оцінка рівня зацікавленості у світі цукрознижувальними препаратами на основі емпагліфлозину з використанням інструментарію Google Trends. Матеріали та методи. Google Trends — це сучасний інструмент, що забезпечує глибоке розуміння поведінки користувачів Google і дозволяє оцінити динаміку інтересу населення до запитів, що стосуються різних сфер життя, зокрема охорони здоров’я. Для вирішення поставленого завдання використовували онлайн-сервіс Google Trends, який останнім часом дедалі частіше застосовують у медичних дослідженнях для аналізу статистики пошукової активності в різних країнах світу. Результати та обговорення. Для оцінки загальних тенденцій інтересу до препарату Jardiance проаналізовано пошукову активність (англійською мовою) за терміном «Jardiance» та окремо за назвою діючої речовини «Empagliflozin» за останні 5 років (станом на 15 серпня 2025 року) з використанням технології Google Trends. Рівень насиченості пошуковими запитами щодо препарату Jardiance (англійською мовою) виявився майже однаковим у різних регіонах Угорщини. Високий інтерес до емпагліфлозину зафіксовано у 5 регіонах та в столиці — Будапешті. Порівняння пошукових запитів у Google (англійською мовою) в Угорщині за допомогою Google Trends виявило стабільний інтерес до сучасних лікарських засобів. Висновки. Технологія Google Trends дозволяє науковцям отримувати кількісні та якісні показники пошукових запитів користувачів Google і визначати актуальні тенденції в різних країнах світу для подальшого аналізу. Пошукову активність у Google щодо препарату Jardiance (для лікування цукрового діабету) в Угорщині спостерігають із 2021 року. Подальше використання Google Trends для оцінки рівня інтересу до нових препаратів для лікування цукрового діабету 2-го типу є перспективним. Abstract. Background of the problem and aim(s). Drugs of the sodium-dependent glucose cotransporter inhibitor group have already shown their safety, including empagliflozin, dapagliflozin, canagliflozin, etc. The purpose of the work is to assess the level of interest in sugar- lowering drugs based on empagliflozin in the world using the technology of the Google Trends search resource. Materials and methods. Google Trends is a new tool that can provide a deep understanding of the behaviour of Google users and makes it possible to assess the patterns of interest of the population in queries made regarding various areas of life, including those related to healthcare. To solve the problem, the modern online service Google Trends was used, which has recently been increasingly used in health research and provides search statistics on interest - search activity in different countries of the world. Results and discussion. To assess the general trends in interest in the drug Jardiance, the search activity in English for the term Jardiance and separately for its active ingredient Empagliflozin was analyzed over the past 5 years as of August 15, 2025, using Google Trends technology. The level of search saturation by regions of Hungary is almost the same for searches for the drug Jardiance in English. High interest is noted for Empagliflozin in 5 regions and in the capital Budapest. When comparing search queries in English on Google in Hungary using Google Trends technology, a stable interest in modern medicines was revealed. Conclusions. Google Trends technology allows scientists to obtain quantitative and qualitative indicators of Google user queries and determine current trends in different countries of the world for analysis. Google search activity for the diabetes drug Jardiance has been observed in Hungary since 2021. Further use of Google Trends technology to assess the level of interest in new drugs for the treatment of diabetes mellitus type 2 may be promising.
