    Manifestations of cruel, inhuman types of behavior and torture of Ukrainian military who died in captivity

    The given information and forensic medical characteristics of injuries found on the bodies of Ukrainian soldiers who were in Russian captivity and died as a result of cruel, inhuman treatment and torture in 2022–2023. According to their nature and morphological features, the damage could be the result of high temperature action using hot metal objects, but more likely, the result of the use of electric current conductors (bare end of the wire). In other cases, after the exhumation of the occupied territory of the Kharkiv region, the manifestations of torture were brain injuries and fractures of the bones of the body caused by blunt hard objects with a limited surface. All the injuries described by us correspond both to the list of physical evidence of torture of the “Istanbul Protocol” and to the list of war crimes of the “Rome Statute”.

    Forensic Medical Examination of Severity at Closed Injuries of the Chest According to the Materials of the Specialized Clinic

    Introduction: A closed chest injury is a frequent type of damage to the organs of the external respiratory system. Victims with such an injury may become the object of a forensic medical examination. The aim of the work was to determine the severity of closed blunt trauma of the chest based on the materials of a specialized clinic in order to determine additional diagnostic criteria for the severity of such an injury. Materials and Methods: 123 medical cards of inpatients department, patients with chest injuries, who were treated at the Kharkiv Institute of General and Emergency Surgery named after V.T. Zaitsev. Forensic evaluation of closed injuries of the chest organs was carried out according to the degree of severity of physical injuries based on the materials of clinical observations. Results: Severe injuries were found in 22 (17.9%) cases of injuries with the occurrence of a life-threatening phenomenon, namely, acute respiratoryfailure. Injuries of medium severity were found in 71 (57.7%) cases of chest injuries, mainly with rib fractures, due to the absence of danger to life. Mild injuries were found in 30 (24.4%) cases of chest injuries without rib fractures with intrapleural injuries and complications or mild chest injuries without any complications. Conclusions: It was determined that additional diagnostic criteria for closed injuries of the chest, which must be taken place when determining the severity of physical injuries, should be considered: dynamics and duration of restoration of post-traumatic morpho-functional changes of injured organs, loss of part or all of the respiratory organ (lungs), occurrence of life-threatening phenomenon.

    Forensic medical aspects of the severity of chest injuries according to the results of the examination of patients in a specialized hospital

    Closed chest trauma can cause impaired functioning of the respiratory system. Victims with closed chest trauma may be subject to forensic medical examination. The purpose of the study is to determine the severity of closed blunt chest trauma from a forensic perspective based on the results of an examination of patients in a specialised hospital to identify additional diagnostic criteria. The material for the study was the medical records of 103 inpatients of the Zaycev V.T. Institute of General and Emergency Surgery. Considering the diagnostic examination of the victims in the observation groups, the severity of the injuries was determined. Severe bodily injuries were diagnosed in 19 (18.4%) cases of closed chest injuries with acute respiratory failure and loss of part or all of an organ (lung). Injuries of moderate severity were diagnosed in 70 (67.9%) cases of closed chest trauma, mostly with rib fractures, in the absence of life-threatening injuries. Minor injuries were diagnosed in 14 (13.6%) cases of chest trauma without rib fractures with intrapleural injuries and complications or without any complications. It has been established that in the forensic assessment of closed chest injuries, additional diagnostic criteria should be considered: the presence of acute respiratory failure, the dynamics and duration of recovery of post-traumatic morphological and functional changes in injured organs, and the loss of part or all of an organ (lung).

    Судово-медична оцінка механічної травми трубчастих кісток нижніх кінцівок

    У дисертаційному дослідженні викладено наукове обґрунтування та нове вирішення актуальної науково-практичної проблеми судової медицини – судово-медичної експертизи постраждалих з різними варіантами механічної травми довгих кісток нижніх кінцівок на підставі встановлення основних механізмів травми та структури судово-медичних критеріїв визначення ступеня тяжкості тілесних ушкоджень під час первинних й повторних судово-медичних експертиз, дослідження медичних критеріїв, дефектів надання медичної допомоги, факторів ризику та кількісних прогностичних критеріїв, які потенціюють несприятливі наслідки закритих переломів стегнової та великогомілкової кісток у вигляді розладу здоров’я зі стійкою втратою працездатності більш ніж на 33 % з виходом на тяжкі тілесні ушкодження; розробки та впровадження нової комплексної методики судово-медичної експертизи й алгоритму дій судово-медичного експерта у разі оцінювання ступеня тяжкості тілесних ушкоджень, їх механізму та давності у постраждалих з травмою нижніх кінцівок на основі оцінки результатів сучасних експертних, клінічних, інструментальних методів обстеження.
