Abstract: Monitoring of caffeine consumption proved to be important as 27% of examined young people self-reported daily overuse of caffeine due to consumption of various caffeine-including beverages. Mean daily dose of caffeine was approximately the same among both young men and young women, but it greatly varied individually. Moreover, as the CCQ used for caffeine daily intake estimation didn’t comprise data about food that may also contain caffeine, the real daily dose may be even higher that received data. Therefore, the continuation of research in that area together with popularization of caffeine intake recommendations, caffeine content of food and beverages, and possible outcomes may help to improve the overall population health.
Description: Caffeine is a legal stimulant found in various plants, such as coffee and cocoa beans, tea leaves, guana berries, kola nut, thus is contained in a number of different types of food and beverages and largely consumed all over the world (European Food Safety Authority, 2015). Caffeine may affect the health negatively, decreasing calcium level leading to fragility of bones, influencing cardiovascular system as it increases heart rate and blood pressure that may lead to increase of mortality in people with cardiovascular diseases, and causing negative outcomes in pregnant women and on fetal development (Wikoff D. et al., 2017). However, positive effects of caffeine are also present, as it enhances cognitive performance and mood, reduces body mass by increasing the energy expenditure that is especially important for people with hypodynamia (Lewis S.F., Hennekens C.H., 2018). The influence of caffeine on organism greatly depends on its daily dosage. Considering all mentioned above, researches focused on estimation of consumption of caffeine coming from various products possess high value for monitoring of health in population. The aim of research was to study the peculiarities of consumption of caffeine in students.
