Historical facts of gender stereotypes in the ancient and medieval medicine

Abstract

The history of women in medicine is marked by challenges and achievements. In the days of Antiquity, only men were allowed to study the art of healing, and this profession was considered exclusively male. But there were evidences that in Ancient Egypt women worked in obstetrics and gynecology. There were also reports of women performing surgery in Ancient Babylon, Greece and Rome. Arabs had female physicians in the stationary and mobile hospitals. In the following years, despite numerous obstacles, more and more women continued to develop in medicine.
