Abstract

Disorders caused by impaired function of neuromuscular junction are seen fairly often, and their mechanisms still remain unclear. All disorders of this group are considered painless, because in the patients the painless muscle fatigue is observed. The objective of this work was to analyze the existing data and to determine the possible reasons and physiological mechanisms of one of those disorders – myasthenia gravis.

Description

Myasthenia gravis is the autoimmune impairment of neuromuscular junction with 2 possible mechanisms – blockage of nicotinic cholinergic receptors and blockage of MuSK proteins. Based on those mechanisms, modern treatment of MG includes the correction of relative deficiency of acetylcholine, suppression of autoimmune process, thymus x-ray therapy and removal, etc. However, the efficiency of treatment is relative, and the response to any form of treatment is difficult to assess because the severity of symptoms fluctuates. All these facts prove the necessity of future thorough study of myasthenia gravis and its mechanisms.
